Nevada City retains it's old world charm and was the most important mining town in California during the period 1850 - 51

Historic Highway 49 runs north to south along the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California in what is known as 'Gold Country'. During the late 1840's mining settlements sprung up along what is today Highway 49, many of which still exist today as working towns or as ghost towns. This is a 299 mile photographic journey from Chinese Camp to Nevada City visiting the many historic towns dotted alongside or near Highway 49.
